Mike has been doing a great job of looking after the vineyard. I've been doing the odd inspection, and bit of bud rubbing, but the rest is due to him.
It's flowering time. The picture below shows some of the syrah flower buds.
Next jobs are to keep the vines under control by moving the wires one last time, and tucking vines which escape back into the wires. In a couple of weeks, once flowering has finished we will be doing 'leaf plucking'. This involves taking off the leaves around the fruit to improve air flow. This greatly reduces the incidence of fungal diseases in our humid climate. It's a time consuming job, but a satisfying one.
